FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FENCES

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FENCES

PVC Fence Questions
What is PVC?
PVC stands for Poly Vinyl Chloride.
Are there different kinds of PVC?
Yes. PVC is an extruded product. You will find products that are Co-extruded and mono-extruded. Co-extruded products have inferior products mixed within the extrusion. A layer is usually placed over this product that gives the product an appearance of being the same color through and through. Our Country Estate Products are made from mono-extruded material that is UV tested to be 100% weatherable.
What are the advantages of a PVC fence?
By purchasing a PVC fence, you are making an investment. Not only will it increase the value of your home, it will give you years of beauty without the maintenance. You can purchase 3-4 wood fences within the time that your County Estate PVC Fence will be standing. A Country Estate Fence comes with a 50 year limited warranty.
Why should I buy a CEF if I plan on moving in 5 years?
Your Country Estate Fence comes with a transferable warranty. Should you sell your home within 10 years of owning your fence, you can transfer the warranty to the new owner. A service fee of 425.00 will apply. See warranty for details.
I have a Commercial Property. Are the warranties the same for my purchase?
No. Country Estate warrants their products for commercial application for a period of 20 years. This warranty is to the original purchaser only and is not transferable.
I have heard that some PVC gates fall apart, why is that?
Some manufacturer's use 1 3/4" x 2 1/2" framing that is glued in the corners. When a gate is made this way and it gets hit or slammed shut, there is the possibility the gate will break. Our gates are made of durable material, using 4" x 4" or 5" x 5" PVC uprights with an internal shock to keep the gate secured.
I'm so confused, other fence companies tell me they have the best PVC fence. How can I be sure I'm getting the best?
Nebraska Plastics, Inc., manufacturer of the Country Estate Fence line, has been in business for over 60 years and is the one who warrants your fence. Schiano Bros, Inc., along with its Suffolk County affiliate Pipe-Line Fence, are the only authorized dealers for Country Estate Fence in New York’s 5 Boroughs as well as in Nassau & Suffolk Counties. Some companies use different manufacturers. Some companies mix and match various components to make the style you want. If a contractor says they're giving you a Country Estate Fence, they must purchase from us.
Is there a bar in the bottom of your PVC fence styles?
Some selections require that there be an aluminum bar placed in the bottom rail for strength. Some styles, such as the Lakeland or Hollingsworth, have a heavy 2" x 8" bottom rail, so there is no need for additional support. Added support is given based on the size of the rails and the length of the selection. Whenever it is required, aluminum will be used, not steel. Any other material other than aluminum will rust and bleed into the fence.

Wood Fence Questions
What is the difference between Cedar & Spruce wood fences?
The main difference between cedar & spruce is longevity. Northern white cedar should last on Long Island about 10-15 years. Spruce should last about 7 years. Where and how it is installed can add to or take away from the life of your wood fence. A wood fence installed 2" off the ground will last longer then if it were sitting on the ground. Installation near trees, brush, sprinklers, etc. can decrease the life of a wood fence. Even though spruce is cheaper then cedar, you will have to replace it in half the time.
What is the difference between #1 & #2 grade stockade?
#1 is cleaner & smoother than #2. You will find knots on both, but they will be tighter on the #1 than on the #2. There is no difference in the life of the stockade. It is only cosmetic. Once it weathers, it can be difficult to tell the difference.
Do cedar & spruce look the same?
No. Cedar has a reddish/yellow tone. When it grays, it appears silver gray. Spruce is whiter than cedar and when it grays, it appears dark gray.
Why does my wood fence lean after a while?
Generally wood fences lean due to ground movement & wind. For various reasons, when a wood fence is installed on wood posts, the posts are not cemented in. Consequently, they rot faster and snap at the ground during high winds. Some homeowners will, therefore, have their wood fence installed on steel posts as steel posts can be cemented into the ground. Although you cannot guarantee that there will be no shifting due to ground movement, it is less likely to be noticeable with steel posts.
Why do I always have problems with my wood gate?
There could be a number of reasons you have problems with your wood gate. Ground movement can shift your gate, making it difficult to open. Warping can also be a factor. In addition, you may not have your gate braced properly. There are 2 ways your gate could be braced. The A brace was used if fence was constructed without knowing which side the gate would be hanging from. The standard brace is installed with the higher part of the brace pointing up to the latch side of the gate. This helps keep the latch up, leaving less chance for sagging.
What is cheaper, a wood fence or a PVC fence?
Initially, the price of a wood fence will look cheaper than PVC. In the long run, a PVC fence is cheaper because you will most likely replace your wood fence at least 2-3 times within the life of a PVC fence.
Do I need to treat or seal my wood fence?
Any preserver or sealer used on a wood fence can only help it last longer.
Do I have to face the finished side of a wood fence to my neighbor?
Each town has its own ordinances, so you must check with your local building department. In NY state, if you have a pool, the finished side needs to be facing out. One alternative is to purchase one of our Neighbor Friendly Fences as it is finished on both sides.
